COO Growth Path — Leadership or Legal Focus

What will I be doing?
You will pursue novel initiatives and manage them from a cross-functional perspective.

You will begin by learning legal basics, elements of finance, business decision-making, project management, how to gain leverage with technology, and elements of people management.

Depending on your abilities and inclinations, as well as the company’s needs, you will go into more depth in:
Management & Leadership - working with people and helping them to be their best.
Legal - legal analysis, handling complex documents, and legal judgment.
Operations - organize, leverage technology, and execute for maximum performance.
Research - getting the best answer in uncertain situations.
Branding - presentations, media, and events.

You will start by assisting our Principal, in a few weeks start to execute projects on your own, and can progress to taking ongoing responsibility for key areas depending on your goals and path.

What will I be learning?
You will be mentored one-on-one by our Principal. You will learn multiple aspects of real-world problem-solving, and develop your judgment in addition to gaining technical knowledge and skill.

If your focus is primarily on management and leadership, you will learn how to work with and through people and how to get things done both quickly and well. You’ll acquire the background you’ll need to deal with uncertain situations (including legal uncertainty) quickly and carefully. You can become someone that routinely dispatches challenges in an economical and timely manner that many large businesses would struggle with.

If your focus is primarily on producing great legal documents, you will have an opportunity to get feedback both from partners in elite law firms and from business people with significant legal perspective. Both a good document and great document are clean and substantially error-free. The difference between a good document and a great document is that a great document is informed by both legal and business considerations and reflects the judgement of its author. We want you to have the experiences and learn the multiple perspectives that lead to good legal judgment, in addition to learning legal skills.

If your focus is elsewhere, you’ll learn about a wide variety of business concepts that you’ll need to accomplish things in the business or non-profit world. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn specific skills such as research or branding that interest you.

What are the unique advantages of this opportunity?
Our Principal will be focused on your learning and success, giving you the benefit of his methods and experience. You’ll benefit from the skills you learn no matter what path you take.

You will get an opportunity to work cross-functionally, which is rare in early career opportunities. One thing stands out in the development path of entrepreneurs and high-level executives: early leadership and cross-functional experiences. This is your opportunity to gain those experiences. Working cross-functionally and leading your projects, you will gain management, legal, and decision-making expertise.

You have an opportunity to get two promotions and become COO. There is no one ahead of you in the path to this important and highly-compensated role, which is currently vacant. We are hoping to develop a COO, and it could be you.

What are the unique challenges of this opportunity?
You will have to develop judgment and consider things from more than one perspective. In general, you will not be able to get a good result just by using a formula. You will need to learn new skills. This role is full-time in-office.

What is the growth path for this opportunity?
You have a clear path to more than one promotion. The firm does not have a dedicated COO and we are hoping to develop one.

Alternatively, you may choose to opt for outstanding career growth in a more specialized role.

What can I do to improve my application?
Whether or not you write a cover letter, please indicate which of Management, Legal, Operations, Research, or Branding you have the most interest in, and which one you think you have the most talent for.

What is the expected compensation range for this position?
We expect to pay a base in the range of $200K-$350K for full-time hires working in the New York office. Base salary is only one aspect of total compensation, which includes an annual discretionary bonus. You will also be eligible for our standard benefits package including housing subsidy.
